Are you looking into cooking scrumptious curry dishes? Now's a great time as any to begin. Curry is popular worldwide, because it's versatile, delicious, diverse, and not as hard to cook and prepare as you might think. I'd like to believe that curry is what made India one of the world's leading cuisines. You are probably not aware of this, but practically every household in India has its own special curry recipe. Just imagine how much variety there is available for you!
Contrary to what most people think, Indian cuisine is not just about curry, oil and chilies. I can't think of any other cuisine that has as many diverse and healthy blend of spices and vegetables. Indian cuisine is not exclusive for vegetarians too! Think of the many popular Indian dishes such as Butter Chicken, Vindaloo, Fish Amritsari and Rogan Josh. Indians too know how to please the palate of non-vegetarians!
Come join me as we explore and demystify Indian cuisine. Here are some frequently asked questions about curry dishes to get you started:
1. Is curry always spicy?
A lot of Indian recipes call for the use of chilies in some form - red chili powder, fresh green chilies and dry red chilies. Every kind of chili has its own heat and potency. There are some dishes that rely heavily on these chilis to enhance the flavor, so if you don't fancy eating a meal that is too spicy, you have a solution - you can reduce the amount of chilies that you add to your cooking.
There are some dishes that use chili just for the purpose of enhancing the heat, which will, in turn, enhance other flavors. In this case you can do away without the chili.
2. Is curry too oily?
This largely depends on how you cook your dish. There are lots of dishes that require you to fry the garam masala - a paste formed from different spices which becomes the base of the dish - in some oil. Many people think that the more oil you use to cook the masala, the better its taste. This is wrong, you can make a dish that's just as delicious using half the oil.
Curry dishes are very healthy, but again, it would depend on how you cook it. There are lots of curry versions which use an amazing array of fresh vegetables and fruits, fresh fish, meat and spices. Every one has its own nutritional and medicinal properties!
