Cooking Equipment You Can't Do Without

There is no firm rule as to what you should or should not have in your kitchen. A kitchen is a personal thing, and what you have or decide to put in it highly depends on your lifestyle, choice, and personal preference in cooking. However, anyone will agree that there are certain cooking equipment that you simply cannot do without. These are the basics, and without them, you would find yourself suddenly stuck in the middle of your cooking session!

Some of these basic items that are simply indispensable in the kitchen include, but are not limited to:

• Pot and pans. Your collection of pots and pans depend on how often you cook, how many people you cook for, what you like to prepare. For starters, you would need a skillet, a sauce pan, and a Dutch oven. You can choose from many different kinds of metal used: cast iron, stainless steel, copper, aluminum, clad cookware, etc. If you plan to buy, consider doing some research first.
• Cooking spoons, spatulas, and ladles. You need a variety of these, preferably those that won't scratch your pots and pans.
• Knives and chopping board. You would probably want to have a chef's knife, a paring knife, and a serrated knife handy. Choose carbon steel or stainless steel, but don't try to scrimp on you knife budget. This is one piece of cooking equipment that you would use over and over again.
• Measuring cups and spoons. Choose glass or plastic, depending on what's comfortable for you.
• Colander, sieves, cheese grater. It's not easy preparing spaghetti without a colander (and cheese grater). Colanders can also be used when washing fruits and veggies, and sieves are for refining things like baking powder.
• Can opener, kitchen sears, peeler. You'll not realize how important these little pieces of cooking equipment are until you need them but you don't have them!
• Mixing bowl, baking sheets, rolling pin.

This, of course, goes without saying that you would need a stove top, preferably an oven, a refrigerator, and a kitchen sink. Depending on your preference, you might also want to have some other useful kitchen helpers, such as:

• Oven toaster
• Microwave oven
• Wok
• All-around electric cooker

Of course, as you cook more and more, you would find that you need more than what this list of basic cooking equipment covers.
